Almost since the first records of Mount St Benedict, there is mention of a monastery shop. To begin with, it was a very simple affair, selling a few Rosary beads, medals, candles and prayer leaflets. As the monastery grew, so did the shop. The choice of a suitable place for the shop was important, as it had to be situated near the area where the pilgrims gathered - that is, outside the entrance of the Church. It was also necessary that the shop be modernised, enlarged and equipped with display cabinets etc. All this completed, a new shop, called The Pax Abbey Shop, was opened and blessed by Abbot John Pereira on 15 January 2005. Mrs Sylvestre-Williams manages the daily operations of the Shop. The General Manager, Mrs Nimblett, ensures that the entire business functions smoothly.
The shop provides a wide variety of religious items, books, pictures, rosaries, candles, medals, etc. A cafeteria is attached to the facility and is an integral part of The Pax Abbey Shop Complex. Both the cafeteria and the religious shop are open seven days of the week. It is the only totally Catholic shop in the Tunapuna area, and caters for the hundreds of pilgrims who visit the monastery on a daily basis. These pilgrims can be seen knocking at the door of the shop from as early as 7:00 am each morning. The decor and layout of the shop, and its genial atmosphere, make it a place of welcome, where people can browse at their leisure. It is a truly worthy venture of the abbey in keeping with the spirit of benedictine hospitality.
